Kuttampuzha

Kuttampuzha, Ernakulam is what you would call a typical village in Kerala. Majority of its population is involved in farming and other related practices. The village witnesses the meeting of two rivers namely Pooyamkutty and Edamalayar. Still miles away from commercialization, the village air carries the scent of Kerala’s untainted essence.
Kuttampuzha is heavily overshadowed by the nearby tourist destination Thattekkad Bird sanctuary. No doubt, Thattekkad is a paradise for bird lovers and nature enthusiasts but Kuttampuzha which is a mere 7 km away is no less than Thattekkad in terms of natural beauty. If Thattekkad is known for its birds, Kuttampuzha is a natural habitat for butterflies.
Malabar rose, Malabar raven, Blue Mormon, Clipper, The Red pierrot. Gladey Bushbrown are just many of the species commonly found here. There are quite a number of bathing ghats in this village. The sheer magnificence of the river’s flow is enough to take away your breath. You need to come visit and soak in its rawness from the soil, the wind and the rivers, to know what I am talking about.
The brooding trees bent over the river on the other bank of the river appear as if they are watching their own reflections in water. I was at once reminded of the lines of a Hindi poet who sang about trees mirroring themselves in the flowing clear water. You can see youngsters swimming in the current at many spots.
The water is so irresistible that even you would want to try swimming. But it is advised to seek some local help before venturing out swimming in the river alone. But are you too apprehensive to swim in the current but still want to enjoy being in the midst of the river away from the land? Do not worry, there are facilities for boat riding too.
Kuttampuzha is about 30 Km from Cochin airport. While Aluva railway station is at a distance of 40 km. If you are travelling to Kuttampuzha via bus from Kochi, the route will go through Kothamnagalam and is about 60 km long. Look for buses that go to places like Thattekkad, Pooyamkutty or Kuttampuzha.
