Ottakathalamedu

The tall tower is manned by Kerala Police to observe hunters and poachers in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. From the view point, at a distant, you can see a Temple. There is a mind boggling legend behind this divine temple of Mangaladevi. Kannagi, the devoted wife of Kovalan, took revenge against killing her innocent husband by accusing him as a thief. It is believed that she burnt the whole Madurai city and later she reached the Suruli hills. From here she went to heaven in Pushpaka Vimana along with Kovalan. Getting inspired from this story, Chera Chenguttuvan, the ancient Tamilakam King, erected this temple of Mangaladevi here. The story of Kannagi was narrated to the Tamil poet, Illango Adigal by Chenguttuvan and later Illango wrote the famous book  Silappathikaram’, the story of Kannagi and Kovalan. Ottakathalamedu has started becoming popular among tourists very recently. Located at a distance of 4 km from Thekaddy, it is a beautiful bike ride from Thekaddy to here. Situated at an altitude of 1300 m above sea level, it offers a breathtaking view of Kumily, Periyar Tiger Reserve, spice gardens and some villages of Tamil Nadu. Be careful while standing at edges because winds can be very strong sometimes. If you love to do some landscape photography, don’t forget to pack your wide angle lens. It’s a perfect place to chill out with your group while watching the sunset. There are no cafes/restaurants around and hence if you plan to hang out there for a while, carry your snacks. Since it is a newly discovered tourist spot, it is not maintained very well, and you should bring your food and plastic waste back with you.
