Anayirankal (Anayirangal) – The Land Where Elephants Descend

Anayirankal, meaning “descent of the elephant”, is a beautiful spot near Munnar, Kerala, where wild elephants often come down to the lake from the surrounding forests. Located about 22 km from Munnar, this serene destination is surrounded by lush tea plantations, evergreen forests, and rolling hills.

The main attraction here is the Anayirankal Dam, built in the 1960s and one of the largest earthen dams in the region. Its vast reservoir is perfect for boating, offering visitors the chance to enjoy the calm waters while spotting elephants, monkeys, and other wildlife. The Elephant Abode Boating Centre provides rides that make the experience even more special.

The journey to Anayirankal is just as enchanting, with scenic views of tea gardens at Lockhart Estate, rocky paths through Gap, and stretches of thick forests lined with tall trees.

Nearby, visitors can explore the Power House Waterfalls at Chinnakanal, which cascade down from 2000 meters, offering a breathtaking view of the Western Ghats.

Mornings here are alive with plantation activity, while evenings are peaceful, filled with birdsong and the rustle of tea leaves in the breeze. With its green tea estates, refreshing walks, boat rides, and wildlife sightings, Anayirankal is an ideal spot for families, photographers, and nature lovers alike.
