Inchathotty

Inchathotty – Kerala’s Longest Suspension Bridge

Inchathotty is a small village near Neriamangalam, Thattekad, and Kothamangalam in Ernakulam district, Kerala. It's known for its suspension bridge, which is the longest in Kerala — about 183 meters long and 1.2 meters wide. This bridge connects the village to the other side of the Periyar River and is a vital route for locals, saving them around 20 km of travel for daily needs.

The area is rich in natural beauty, with dense forests, the peaceful Periyar River, and a friendly local community. It’s located just 10 km from Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, 11 km from Bhoothathankettu Dam, and 60 km from Munnar.

We took a boat ride from Dolar Bird Resorts to Inchathotty, passing through the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary. The ride was peaceful and scenic, although fewer birds were seen due to recent floods. Our trip ended at the Inchathotty Bridge, and walking across it was a unique experience — the bridge gently sways, adding to the thrill.

What makes this place special is its offbeat charm. It’s surrounded by rubber plantations, forests, and traditional Kerala village life. You can reach the bridge from either the Thattekad or Neriamangalam side, but the route through Neriamangalam offers a more authentic countryside feel.

If you're in the Munnar or Kochi region and looking for a quiet, beautiful spot away from the crowds, Inchathotty is worth a visit. Whether you walk across the bridge or take a canoe ride on the river, the experience is unforgettable — just hold on to your camera!
